Characteristics of Focus Groups
Focus group interviews typically have five characteristics or features.
These characteristics relate to the ingredients of a focus group: (1)
people who (2) possess certain characteristics and (3) provide qualitative
data (4) in a focused discussion (5) to help understand the topic of interest.
Other types of group processes used in human services (delphic, brainstorming,
nominal, planning, therapeutic, advisory, etc.) may also have one or more
of these features but not in the same combination as f1ocus group interviews.
