Preface
We want people to listen to us. We want our partners, our kids, our colleagues,
our bosses, our politicians, and the clerk at the store to listen to us.
We want them to pay attention, to show they are listening, and to be open
to what we have to say. Why does it so often feel like we aren't being
heard? People are busy. They listen selectively. People catch fragments
of what was said. They tune out things they don't want to hear. In Western
society, we talk too quickly, we interrupt too often, and we feel we must
respond.
Focus group interviewing is about listening. It is about paying attention.
It is about being open to hear what people have to say. It is about being
nonjudgmental. It is about creating a comfortable environment for people
to share. It is about being careful and systematic with the things people
tell you. When used appropriately, the process improves listening, and
the results can be used to benefit the people who shared the information.
And people go away feeling good about having been heard.
